General Information
La Jolla Cove is located in beautiful La Jolla, California, adjacent to Scripps
Park. This beach is within the boundaries of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve,
so taking or hunting of marine life is not permitted.
The beach is often crowded with
sunbathers, surfers, swimmers, and divers.
When you enter the water, the bottom slopes off pretty quickly. You
can drop down in about 15 feet of water, swim north over the alge covered
rocks and sand, and work your way out to the kelp forest. Or, you can
swim on the surface to conserve air, and drop down at Buoy A at the
Reserve edge.
The facilities and relatively easy
surf entry make the Cove a great spot for recreational divers.
Marine Life
Garibaldi and Kelp Bass galore!
Sheephead, stingrays, leopard sharks, black sea bass, and
Bat Rays are common, as well as Sea stars, Sea Hares, Sea lions,
and Harbor seals.. In the summer months, it's not unusual to see Soupfin
sharks (also known as Tope Sharks). This dive site is densely populated
with marine life, you dont need to look hard to find marine life, it
is usually very obvious.
Conditions
The conditions are usually good,
with relatively small surf and often favorable visibility, due to the
north facing beach and waveblocking Point La Jolla. The bottom compostion
is rocky with spots of sand. It is always a good idea to check with
nearby lifeguards for updated conditions and hours of lifeguard operation
before diving at the Cove. Be aware of any alongshore currents out
by the Buoy.
Facilities There are public rest rooms, with showers,a large grassy area, and
telephones. There are several hotels, retail stores and restaurants
located within 2 blocks.
Lifeguards
The lifeguard station at the Cove has
lifeguards on duty year round. The station opens at 9am in the
summer and closes at sunset. 3 hour parking spots are
available along Coast Blvd next to the beach, but these generally
fill up by 8:30am. Other parking is available on the surrounding streets.
The large grassy area of Scripps Park makes for an ideal place to picnic,
stage, and don your gear.
