General Information
Mission Point Park is located in beautiful Mission Beach, California, adjacent
to the Mission Bay jetty.
The beach is often crowded with
sunbathers, swimmers, snokelers, and divers.
When you enter the water, the sandy bottom slopes off gradually.
You can swim on the surface to the rock wall of the bay, and drop
down into approx. 10 feet of dept. The deepest point is only about
20 feet deep. Many scuba instructors will bring students here on days
when ocean conditions are poor, due to waves and surf, as it provides
a sea water envirnoment that is protected from surf.
The facilities and relatively easy
entry make the bay a great spot for beginning recreational divers.
Marine Life
Garibaldi, Kelp Bass, and Opaleye
galore! Occasional Sheephead, stingrays, Sand
bass, and Senioritas are common, as well as Sea Hares, and Nudibranchs
.This dive site is densely populated with
marine life, you dont need to look hard to find marine life, it is
usually very obvious.
Conditions
The conditions are usually good,
with no surf and often favorable visibility, due to the wave blocking
land-side of Mission Beach. The bottom compostion is sandy with lots
of seagrass in the middle of the bay. Be aware of any tidal currents
running into or out of the Bay. Be sure to check a tide table and try
to dive at slack tide.
Facilities
There are public rest rooms, with showers,a large grassy area, but no
telephones. The nearest public phone is over by the lifeguard station
on Mission Beach. There are several retail stores and restaurants
located within approx. 10 blocks.
Lifeguards
There is no lifeguard
station at Mission Point Park. The nearest lifeguard station is on the ocean side of Mission
Beach. The lifeguards there are on duty year round. The station opens
