Red Algae

     Did you know that the red algae is an nonvascular plant?  Well, it is. Vascular  tissue is a tube made of cells that carry water and food throughout the plant.  So the red algae doesn't have one of those tubes. The red algae's scientific name is rhodophyta.  Red algae are mostly large, many celled algae.  The red algae's red pigment blocks off the color of chlorophyll.  One species of algae is eaten in Japan and another species of algae is used to make agar.   Red algae can be 30-100 cm attached to rocks and shells.  They also look like many-celled red and green pigments and a ribbon-like body.   One example of a red algae is Gelidium and Irish Moss.  You can use red algae to produce food and water in the coastal waters and they can produce agar.
