Secrets of the Tide Pools

Sea Algae

sea algae

A shock may come to you with this piece of information. Sea algae is not a plant. Seaweed is not a plant at all. It is a Protista. A Protista is a kingdom of single-celled organisms and fungi. Most tidepool animals are related to the algae family exhibiting a large range of shapes and colors.  Most do not have roots to take up nutrients.  They have root like things that cling to rocks all day that are called holdfasts.  This name is no exaggeration; holdfast employ the strongest glue known to man, so strong in fact the rock itself breaks before the algae is torn loose from it.  Sea Algae provide refuge to many smaller animals.  Algae can also be called the Green Sea Lettuce or Dead Mans Fingers.
